At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature - to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.

We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.

The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a dynamic and experienced staff attorney to join our Urban Wildlands program, with a focus on Northern California land use issues. The Urban Wildlands program aims to stop unsustainable sprawl and development that threatens critical habitat, creates pollution, exhausts limited water supplies, worsens climate change and drives species extinction. The Staff Attorney will work as part of a team using law, science, media outreach and advocacy to protect the environment and fight destructive land use policies.  The working environment is fast-paced, exciting and supportive.

Main duties:

  • Develop cases to further the goals of limiting sprawl, conversion of open space, preserving water resources, fighting climate change and protecting endangered species.
  • Engage in administrative advocacy, such as meeting with public decisionmakers and commenting on proposed plans, rulemakings and projects.
  • Engage in analysis of and advocacy regarding pending local and state regulations.
  • Litigate cases in state and federal court targeted at private land development, road construction, species conservation, climate change and water supply.
  • Draft press releases and engage directly with members of the media.
  • Work with local, regional and statewide coalitions to oppose destructive and polluting development projects.

Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:

  • At least three years of environmental law experience, including familiarity with the California Environmental Quality Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Administrative Procedure Act, Endangered Species Act and Clean Water Act;
  • Member of the California state bar;
  • Excellent writing, communication, research and oral advocacy skills;
  • An ability to develop cases and manage a busy docket;
  • Scientific literacy;
  • Experience participating in environmental or advocacy campaigns;
  • Passion for, and knowledge of, the natural world, biodiversity, wildlife and waters, and a demonstrated commitment to environmental protection;
  • A strong work ethic and time-management skills.

Benefits package:

  • Paid generous medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance
  • 403(b) plan with opportunity for match
  • Generous time-off policies
  • Relaxed work atmosphere

Application Process: Please submit a cover letter, resume, writing sample and 3-5 references with your application. The position will remain open until filled. No telephone calls, please. Only candidates selected for interviews will be contacted.
