General position overview: The Center for Biological Diversity seeks a full-time Paralegal for our Urban Wildlands Program. The Urban Wildlands program aims to stop unsustainable sprawl that threatens critical habitat, creates pollution, exhausts limited water supplies, and drives species extinction. The Paralegal will provide paralegal, legal secretarial, and administrative support to a dynamic team to support litigation, policy advocacy, grassroots organizing and media outreach. The working environment is fast paced, exciting and supportive.

 Main duties:

  • Preparation of legal documents, including cite checking, completing tables of contents and authorities for briefs, proofreading, formatting, and related tasks.
  • Preparation and indexing of electronic and hard-copy administrative records under the California Environmental Quality Act, appellate appendices, and records for state and federal court litigation.
  • Filing and serving of documents and maintenance of legal dockets, including ensuring compliance with court rules in a variety of state and federal jurisdictions, e-filing, courtesy copies, calendar management for administrative actions and court filings, corresponding with clerks' offices, and related tasks.
  • Maintenance of a legal library, including by updating court rules and adding recent scientific articles, and reference materials.
  • Finalizing comment letters, including retrieval of online references.
  • Factual and legal research.
  • Assisting with the planning and handling of internal and external meetings, travel, and conference arrangements.


Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:

  • A university degree.
  • Paralegal certification.
  • A minimum of two years of previous paralegal experience.
  • Legal secretarial skills.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • The ability to multitask and work well with others as a part of an effective team.
  • A strong work ethic.
  • Familiarity with California and federal environmental laws.

 Salary is commensurate with experience and that of other nonprofit organizations, and includes an excellent vacation and benefits package. The position will be located in our Oakland office.
