Center for Biological Diversity
  • 27-Mar-2018 to 26-May-2018 (MST)
  • Oakland, CA, USA
  • Full Time

At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature - to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.

We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.

The Center for Biological Diversity is currently looking for a full-time Ignite Change Campaigner in our Organizing Department. This position is remote unless you are located near one of the Center's office locations.

Ignite Change is the Center for Biological Diversity's national network for grassroots action that's standing up to save life on Earth. We are organizing across the country to protect the environment and be a powerful, sustained voice for wildlife, wild places and a livable planet.

We're building a massive, volunteer-driven network to challenge Congress, organize and attend rallies, and create local and regional campaigns to save our public lands and oceans.

We need talented, committed people in the movement now more than ever - is that you?

Primary Job duties:

We're looking for that rare someone (Data loving, activist nerd who is ready to organize) who has both a lot of digital/data skills and a lot of political savvy, but we know that not everyone has had the chance to excel in both areas!

So if you have a track record in one area but not the other, but think you have the ability and interest to really develop on the side you are lacking experience with, we want to hear from you. The most important things will be bridging online activism with real world action by engaging with volunteers and spreadsheets with equal passion, and solving problems to get from a vision to the final product.

  • Help manage our Ignite Change member/activist database, build precision-targeted queries, run reports, and bulk import new records.
  • Manage social media channels to engage volunteers in tangible political action.
  • Develop and track meaningful metrics by which we can measure our success.
  • Make sure we have timely access to key information about the performance of our online communications and health of our digital ecosystem.
  • Wrangle complex spreadsheets containing detailed user information, inventing new ways of formatting and cleaning data to match import requirements of new tools.
  • Inspire and engage our volunteers and supporters in strategic campaigns to protect wildlife, wild lands, and our air, water, and climate.
  • Support our distributed-organizing and field campaigns with digital tools including social media, peer-to-peer texting, webinars and other platforms.
  • Mobilize and recruit volunteers to take action, maintain engagement of volunteers, and provide support, training and guidance.

Essential qualities, qualifications, and skills desired:

  • Undergraduate degree and/or at least three years of digital organizing and/or grassroots or campaign organizing experience.
  • Strong data analytics and data management skills.
  • Experience with digital tools including CRM databases (Action Kit or VAN preferred), social media, peer-to-peer texting, and web platforms.
  • The ability to quickly self-learn how to apply new technologies for specific purposes by reading documentation, consulting developers, and referencing APIs. Attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate with team members and volunteers.
  • A proven ability to produce clear, concise, persuasive writing on tight deadlines. Experience with volunteer management and engagement.
  • The ability to juggle multiple projects and multiple deadlines.
  • Experience with campaign planning and strategy preferred.
  • Experience working with a distributed organizing model preferred.
  • A passion for and demonstrated commitment to biodiversity, wildlife and environmental justice.

  • Be a good teammate and colleague. We value teamwork and expect each member of the team to have a "can do" attitude and a willingness to help when/where needed.
  • Be open to and expect weekend and nighttime hours.
  • Be comfortable with a remote workplace. You will interact with your coworkers and with volunteers primarily via Slack, video chat, and phone calls.
  • Be committed to protecting the environment and social justice;
  • Enjoy working in a dynamic, fast-paced workplace where plans can change day-to-day.
  • Be a competent writer. You don't need to be a poet, but you can churn out clearly-written, mostly error-free copy on a tight deadline.
  • Be committed to winning. To us that means being accountable for outcomes, being willing to test your ideas against reality and adapt if your approach isn't working, and being willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish our goals.
  • Be hands-on in your approach. We expect everyone on our team to regularly do every task that we ask volunteers to do. Ours is not a team for "ideas people" or anyone who is unwilling to personally dive in to do necessary repetitive work or manually solve messy, complex, difficult problems.
  • Love and respect volunteers. Volunteers are at the center of everything that we do. We believe that change happens when millions of regular people set out to change the world. Our job is to support volunteer leadership.
  • Ability to understand our digital tools in order to develop creative uses for them
