At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature - to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.

We want those who come after us to inherit a world where the wild is still alive.

The Center is currently looking for a full-time Law Clerk for summer 2018.  This position is located in Oakland, California.

Are you interested in groundbreaking biodiversity conservation legal work in the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area? Then a clerkship with the Center's Oakland office might be right for you.

General position overview:

Law Clerks will work with attorneys on cutting-edge litigation to protect imperiled wildlife and habitat, fight pollution and climate change, and improve water quality and ocean health. Law clerks will assist attorneys with ongoing litigation, including brief-writing, discovery, preparation of memos, legal research and cite-checking, as well as helping investigate new cases, drafting comments to administrative agencies, conducting field work, and coalition building. Law Clerk positions are 40 hours per week and will last 8 or 10 weeks, based upon applicant and Center needs. These are paid positions.

Strong legal research and writing skills are required, as are a sense of humor and the ability to think creatively and communicate effectively. Applicants should be in law school working toward a J.D. or other graduate degree. A background in environmental studies, biology and/or related fields is preferred, as is a demonstrated commitment to the preservation of biodiversity.

Application process:

Please submit a cover letter, resume, transcript, writing sample (no more than 10 pp.) and list of three references. Applications will be accepted until all Law Clerk positions are filled. We would like to make our hiring decisions by October 15.

Only those applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.  No paper applications will be considered. Incomplete applications will not be considered, nor will those by applicants who contact our office without invitation. No phone calls or emails, please.

The Center for Biological Diversity deeply values, and is committed to sustaining and promoting, both biological and cultural diversity. We welcome, embrace and respect diversity of people, identities and cultures. We are committed to fostering an organizational culture of diversity and inclusion. The Center believes staff and board diversity is critical to saving life on Earth.

We are an equal opportunity employer.
