At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature ' to the existence in our world of a vast diversity of wild animals and plants. Because diversity has intrinsic value, and because its loss impoverishes society, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction. We do so through science, law and creative media, with a focus on protecting the lands, waters and climate that species need to survive.

The Center is currently looking for a full-time Legal Fellow. This position may be located in Oakland, California; Portland, Oregon; or Washington, D.C.   

General position overview:


The Center for Biological Diversity is offering a full-time, one-year paid fellowship to a recent law school graduate. The Legal Fellow will work as part of a team using law, science, media outreach and advocacy to protect endangered species and the wild places, oceans, air, water and climate they need to survive. The Legal Fellow will work with experienced Center lawyers who'll provide supervision, training and mentorship. The specific office location and program the Fellow will be placed in will be determined by a combination of the Fellow's interests and our organizational needs. 


Main duties:

  • Legal research and writing, including drafting briefs and other court documents.
  • Assistance with litigation of cases in federal and state courts.
  • Administrative advocacy, such as commenting on proposed plans, rulemakings and projects.
  • Analysis of, and advocacy regarding, pending legislation.
  • Media advocacy.


Essential qualities, qualifications and skills:

  • A J.D. degree.
  • Bar admission (or pending bar exam results).
  • Excellent writing, communication, research and oral advocacy skills.
  • Interest and experience in environmental issues and advocacy.
